Accounting is known as the “language of business,” and fluent practitioners that help ensure financial success for their organizations are in high demand.

When you enroll in the JMU School of Accounting, you'll be part of a school that enjoys a national reputation for excellence in accounting education and is viewed as a prime recruiting source by accounting employers throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. You'll receive an education designed to prepare you for a variety of careers in the fields of accounting, finance, auditing, consulting and information systems.

The 120 credit-hour undergraduate degree consists of the four-year major in accounting, leading to the B.B.A. degree. During your junior year, you can choose to meet with your adviser to discuss enrolling in the graduate program, which leads seamlessly to the award of the B.B.A. degree

B.B.A. majors must complete all 100 and 200-level core requirements and meet all of the formal acceptance criteria for the College of Business to be eligible for junior-level business course work. Consequently, class schedules for the four-semester sequence covering the first and second years must be planned accordingly.

The lower-level core courses are:

COB 191 Business Analytics I
COB 202 Interpersonal Skills
COB 204 Computer Information Systems
COB 241^ Financial Accounting
COB 242*^ Managerial Accounting
COB 291 Business Analytics II
ECON 201 Introduction to Microeconomics
ECON 200 Introduction to Macroeconomics (also satisfies General Education, Cluster 4 Global Experience)
MATH 205 or MATH 235 Calculus (also satisfies General Education, Cluster 3 Mathematics)

Beginning with the 2017-18 Catalog, COB 242 is not used in calculating the B.B.A. core GPA. COB 242 is a prerequisite for COB 300 in Antwerp.

Accounting majors need a “B” or better in both COB 241 & COB 242 to be eligible to take upper-level accounting classes.

The upper-level core is taken after the lower-level core is complete and formal acceptance to the College of Business has been granted. The upper-level core consists of:

COB 300A Integrated Business: Management
COB 300B Integrated Business: Finance
COB 300C Integrated Business: Operations
COB 300D Integrated Business: Marketing
COB 318 Legal and Ethical Environment of Business
COB 487 Strategic Management
