Take your knowledge one step further with the Flood and Coastal Engineering MSc. Sponsored by the Environment Agency, funded places are available for part-time students in employment with the Environment Agency or a risk management authority.
  • This MSc course has been developed to address the increasing demand for creative and innovative professionals who can help deliver flood management initiatives to protect communities against flooding. The course is led by Brunel and co-delivered with HR Wallingford, a world-renowned civil engineering and environmental hydraulics organisation.
  • You will develop advanced technical engineering understanding and skills required to plan, design, implement and manage projects and strategies dealing with flood and coastal risk mitigation and management.
  • You’ll have access to Brunel’s testing facilities that include hydraulic benches and flumes. In addition, you’ll benefit from the hydraulics testing facility at HR Wallingford, the largest in the UK. Their world-class test facilities include: big tanks and flumes; several physical modelling basins; fast flow facility; and tsunami generator.
  • The course is enhanced by a strong professional development programme that runs in parallel with the academic content supported by practical work. You’ll enjoy a series of seminars, workshops, lectures from guest speakers and site visits. There’s also the opportunity to go to conferences and exhibitions where you’ll network with key water industry professionals. You’ll share knowledge and experiences with your peers and receive mentor support. This continued professional development helps you along the accreditation route to become a Chartered Engineer.
  • During the MSc degree in flood and coastal engineering, you will take part in the residential summer school at HR Wallingford which provides you with hands-on learning experience. Here you’ll have the opportunity to experience world-class experimental facilities and contact with senior researchers. There are challenging team building tasks such as the design, build and testing of your own flood product. Civil engineering site visits are also arranged, where you’ll observe key flood risk management assets.
  • Our Flood and Coastal Engineering MSc course is accredited by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM). It is also accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) comprising of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Institute of Highway Engineers, and the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired a partial CEng accredited undergraduate first degree*.

*It should be noted that candidates completing the MSc who hold an underpinning accredited IEng degree or a non-accredited bachelor degree will need to apply for an academic assessment to determine whether they will meet the educational base for CEng registration.

  • The MSc is studied part-time over two years, and a one year full-time course is available for self-funded students.

UK entry requirements

  • A 2:2 (or above) UK Honours degree, or equivalent internationally recognised qualification, in a related subject, or a non-related subject with Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics modules, with good grades, and relevant work experience.
  • If you do not currently meet our Maths or Physics entry requirements the Admissions team may be able to provide you with an opportunity to sit a Maths entry test as part of your offer. 

EU and International entry requirements

  • If you require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK, you must prove knowledge of the English language so that we can issue you a Certificate of Acceptance for Study (CAS). To do this, you will need an IELTS for UKVI or Trinity SELT test pass gained from a test centre approved by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and on the Secure English Language Testing (SELT) list. This must have been taken and passed within two years from the date the CAS is made.

  • BrunELT: 58% (min 55% in all areas)
  • TOEFL: 79 (min R18, L17, S20, W17)
  • Delivery of the course is completed as residential blocks, each of which are typically five days, and material from two modules are included each week. In the time between contact weeks, you’ll study independently with e-learning support. The dissertation will be a substantial, in-depth and critical investigation into an aspect of flood or coastal engineering.
  • This course can be studied 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time, starting in September.

  • Fees for EU applicants – For entry in 2021/22 academic year, eligible EU applicants will have the same tuition fees as UK students to support EU students during this transition period. These fees will be applied for the duration of the course. EU fees for 2022 entry are not yet confirmed.
