The Department of Classical Civilizations is one of the oldest academic departments at Gonzaga University and explores the human experience in antiquity and how the achievements of the distant past have shaped the modern world.

  • Combining the study of ancient languages (Latin, Greek) and contemporary societies, the program provides a strong understanding of – and appreciation for – the classical world’s rich influence on the cultures and heritage of Western civilization. Courses study the history, material culture, mores and values of ancient civilizations, while classroom discussions challenge you to apply this knowledge to issues relevant today.
  • By examining the languages and ethnically diverse societies of the past, the program expands your global perspective, preparing you for careers in a world that is increasingly multicultural and interdependent. Our graduates are well-positioned for professions in fields such as politics, ethics, business, law, sciences and education.
