Our art history curriculum offers breadth, depth, and access to outstanding professors who are leaders in their field.
  • With approximately 40 undergraduate and 25 graduate students active in the program each year, the Art History Program is a close-knit community, and all students receive faculty mentorship throughout their time at AU.
  • Master's students can specialize in Italian Art: Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque; Northern European Art: Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque; Modern European Art (18th to 21st century); American Art (18th to 21st century); or Asian Art (modern and contemporary). Undergraduate students can major or minor in art history and can tailor the degree to a specific area of focus.

Art History (BA)

Admission to the Program

  • Formal admission to the major requires satisfactory completion (grades of C or better) of 12 credit hours of art history courses and departmental approval.

University Requirements

  • 120 credit hours with minimum 2.00 cumulative GPA (Undergraduate Academic Regulation 2)
  • Completion of all requirements for a major (Undergraduate Academic Regulation 9)

  • 39 credit hours with grades of C or better, including a minimum of 24 credit hours at or above 300-level, and at least 20 credit hours taken in residence at American University
  • Art history majors are advised to take at least 12 credit hours in elective courses that complement their interests in art history from studio art, American studies, anthropology, history, literature, music, or philosophy, or a minor in one of these fields
  • With approval of the art history advisor, two 3-credit courses taken through AU Abroad may be counted toward the major requirements
