The Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics is a four-year degree program designed to equip students to gain a broad knowledge in aspects of linguistics. The BA has two concentrations Descriptive Linguistics & Translation Concentration).
  • Descriptive Linguistics Concentration, prepares the student for practical linguistic activities such as preparation for devising an alphabet, creating a dictionary, writing descriptive and pedagogical grammars, and creating teaching materials. Students receive instruction and training in collecting and analysing language data, including the use of digital technology. All basic domains of linguistic research are covered: phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, discourse, semantics, pragmatics of communication, sociolinguistics, and historical linguistics.
  • Translation Concentration prepares the students for a career as a translator. In addition to basic training in linguistics, students receive instruction and practice in translation. This concentration is suitable for those wishing to pursue a career in general, business, or specialty translation, such a Bible translation. Students are expected to choose a language pair (source language and target language) to concentrate on. Emphasis is placed on training in methods and techniques, so that the student’s further career is not necessarily tied to the language pair of their BA program. Given the multilingual nature of African society in general, instruction is geared to allowing for any target language, not just major national or international languages. Source languages currently may be English, French, Swahili, and the biblical languages Greek and Hebrew.
