Explore a career in adventure-related fields. This entry-level, eight-month program combines classroom instruction with courses in wilderness travel, canoeing, rock climbing, mountaineering, whitewater kayaking and more. Your certificate credits count towards completion of an Adventure diploma or degree concentration.

  • The Adventure Guide Certificate will give you the skills, knowledge and experiences leading to a broader understanding in the adventure industry and leadership within. Applied and practical modularized classroom courses are offered in wilderness travel, wilderness first aid, guiding leadership, wilderness environment, expedition planning and the adventure industry.
  • Fees based on (15 credits/5 courses)

Entry Requirements

Limited admission

  • 19 years of age at the start of the program
  • Attend a program information session in person or by telephone
  • Complete the Adventure Studies information form
  • English Studies 12 (or equivalent)
  • Mathematics 11 (or equivalent)
  • Recommendations: Applicants in the Adventure Guide Certificate do so based upon their technical skill and experience level in at least one adventure sport. Entry is competitive and applications are screened to ensure an adequate level of outdoor recreation experience has been attained prior to entry to TRU.

  • The Wilderness Environment
  • Advanced Wilderness First Aid
  • Expedition Planning and Leadership

Field courses — required (4 credits)

Kayak I

Rock Climbing 1 (or 2)

  • Field courses — required minimum of one of the following three courses (2 credits)
  • Flatwater Canoe Instructor, or

Sea Kayaking I, or River Rafting I

  • Field Courses — required minimum of one of the following two courses (2 credits)

Ski Touring 1 and/or 2

  • Mountaineering 1
  • Electives - Minimum of two more elective activity courses (4 credits)

  • CASI Snowboard Instructor Level I
  • Alpine Ski Instructor I, or Telemark Ski Instructor I
  • Swiftwater Rescue Technician III
