The Master of Arts in Africana Studies at Stony Brook University is designed for those seeking a profound understanding of the experiences of people of African descent globally and across time. Studied full-time on campus over two years, you will complete 30 graduate credits, including 18 in the Africana Studies Graduate Core Curriculum, which introduces theoretical and methodological issues of the African Diaspora. Your studies will involve foundational courses, a research seminar on the historiography of the African Diaspora, and elective courses. You will also undertake a 6-credit research thesis project, with opportunities for study abroad in Africa or the Caribbean-Latin America. You will graduate prepared for careers in education, public service, cultural institutions, and further doctoral studies.
