As a teacher of chemistry, you’ll transform your existing knowledge of how matter works into a format which can be understood by, and spark the interest of secondary school pupils. You’ll also train to teach general science, comprising of physics, biology and chemistry, to lower school pupils. The PGDE Secondary Education: Chemistry with Science at the University of Strathclyde is designed for those passionate about science education, offering a route to a recognised teaching qualification. This programme equips you with the pedagogical skills and subject knowledge essential for inspiring the next generation of scientists.
This postgraduate diploma is studied full-time on campus over nine months, blending academic study with practical teaching experience. A highlight for many student teachers is attending the residential Scottish Universities’ Science School (SUSS), an excellent opportunity to network with future science teachers from across Scotland. You will engage with compulsory classes in Education Studies, Professional Values, Professional Learning Through Enquiry, and Professional Skills, alongside optional classes for Masters credits. You will graduate with a PGDE, a worldwide teaching qualification regulated by the General Teaching Council for Scotland and the Scottish Government.
