4. Going Through the Genuine Student (GS) Requirement

This used to be the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) process but, in 2024, has since changed to the Genuine Student (GS) Requirement. It aims to prove to the Department of Home Affairs that your intention for applying for a visa is to study in Australia.

Students fill out an online application form satisfying the following requirements.

• A valid offer letter from the institution.
• A bank statement reflecting first-year tuition, maintenance, insurance, and travel costs.

5. Paying First Semester Tuition

Once you pass the GS process, you will pay your tuition deposit, which is often your first trimester or semester tuition cost. It secures your place in the institution and allows you to apply for a visa.

6. Getting Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)

The university issues a CoE through email once you pass the GS process and they have received your tuition deposit. This usually takes about one week. It allows you to start the student visa application.

7. Applying for an Australian Study Visa

The application for the Australian study visa is done online using an ImmiAccount and costs AUD 710. Other requirements of the study visa include:

• You must have a CoE to do a course in a recognised institution in Australia
• If you are under 18, your parents or legal guardian must fill out form 1229, giving their consent for you to get a study visa
• You must also provide evidence of your ability to cover your maintenance costs during the study period by sharing up to six months of certified bank statements.

The amount required is your remaining first year’s tuition fees (after subtracting your tuition deposit),  AUD 24,505 to cover a full year of living expenses, and up to AUD 3,000 for return airfare.  

• You must provide proof of Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), which costs approximately AUD 700 to 800 for 12 months. You must also meet English language requirements. 

The Australian student visa allows you to do the following:

Permanent Residency (PR) After Study in Australia

The most common route to get permanent residency in Australia after studies is through the Work-stream permanent residence visa. This means that if you wish to remain in Australia after studies you must get sponsorship from an employer or have skills that Australia needs.  

The typical path to a permanent residence visa for international students is the Temporary Graduate Visa: Post-Study Work stream (Subclass 485) after completing your studies.
